Fresh on the heels of his 2022 offering Follow Your Heart, Johannes Luley is delighting his listeners with a stunning new album. “August” shifts from the carefully selected covers and standards of “Follow Your Heart” to a very personal collection of seven all-original creations. The majority of tunes showcase Johannes predominantly on electric guitar, while others focus on nylon and 12-string acoustics, resulting in a rich palette of sonic flavors. Johannes is accompanied by the ever engaging and powerful trio of David Hughes on upright bass, Chris Lawrence on flugelhorn, and former Perfect Beings band mate Ben Levin on drums. Driven by the dynamic interaction of Hughes and Levin, Johannes and trumpeter Chris Lawrence connect gracefully, weaving their melodies into nuanced soundscapes. With August, Johannes continues to process his roots, which are deeply anchored in Jazz music – at age 13 he was the youngest student of Dutch-German Jazz guitar legend Eddy Marron. His father, an avid jazz lover, exposed Johannes to the greats, live in concert: Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, George Benson and Weather Report, to name a few. Throughout this invigorating recording, Johannes explores new chordal structures and improvisational techniques, which, in combination with his distinct production style result in an unusual and bold sound. The pristine recording is true to the responsive ambience of his Los Angeles studio. Mastered by Grammy® Award winning engineer Eric Boulanger, this album is bound to leave its mark.
