‘The Saint of Lost Causes’ is the eighth studio album from American roots troubadour, Justin Townes Earle. When writing this album, Earle focused on a different Americ – the disenfranchised and the downtrodden, the oppressed and the oppressors, the hopeful and the hopeless.
The son of Steve Earle with a very appropriate middle name, Justin Townes Earle does not question himself and successfully asserts his identity album after album, without desperately trying to cast away his father’s shadow. And he does so calmly, coolly and unpretentiously. With his blend of vintage rock’n’roll, raspy blues, street folk and alternative country, his eighth album entitled The Saint of Lost Causes is a continuation of this deceptively care-free career and impressive level of song-writing and composition. And whether he is referring to his run-down country and the people he left behind or his own wrinkled soul, Earle Jr. sings with a sincerity that takes a toll. It is impossible not to think of Dad on some tracks and Van Morrison on others (Frightened By The Sound). But above all, it’s Justin Townes Earle that Justin Townes Earle reminds us of. And that’s all that matters… – Marc Zisman
