After the two critically acclaimed albums “Imprints” (2016) and “Circles” (2018), Fab4, the ensemble led by Swedish trombonist Karin Hammar, are now set to expand their sound. The core line-up of Andreas Hourdakis on guitar, double bassist Niklas Fernqvist and Fredrik Rundqvist on drums is doubled, so to speak, by a classical string quartet and is given a kind of stylish icing on the cake with the chromatic harmonica of Olivier Ker Ourio.”Strings Attached” is the title of the new album, which is something of an understatement, because these strings are by no means just added or attached. Hanna Helgegren and Karin Liljenberg (first and second violins), Jill Johansson (viola) and Anna Wallgren (cello) become a fully-fledged string quartet that is both an elementary and independent part of the compositional structure – all of which, incidentally, are Hammar’s own compositions. It is often a reduced prelude that opens up to organic improvisations. Classical textures are interwoven with original jazz progressions to create completely unique worlds of sound. Hourdakis is an agile electric guitarist who roams the fringes of fusion with stylistic confidence. The rhythm section provides plenty of pressure and drive when required, and the floating melismas of the harmonica exude a certain retro charm. Always transparent chamber music in the ensemble.
