Not too many Austrian jazz musicians were allowed to leave a lasting “footprint” in the motherland of jazz. The great Hans Koller is of course to be mentioned, who has never lived in the USA, but who was the first European musician in the time-honored downbeat to be awarded a ***** rating for a trio recording with Attila Zoller and Martial Solal. Joe Zawinul was probably the most successful emigrant and wrote living jazz history with Weather Report to this day. Not to forget Michael Mantler, who played a leading role in the October Revolution of free jazz in the Cellar Café in 1964.And also a certain Peter Wolf should be mentioned here, who, alongside Frank Zappa, was partly responsible for his album “Joe’s Garage” and who later made a career above all as a producer (which continues successfully to this day). With this Peter Wolf, Karl Ratzer founded the legendary band “Gipsy Love” in 1971, which disbanded after only two recordings, because Ratzer left for America, where he quickly gained a foothold and worked with people like Chet Baker, Jeremy Steig, Joe Chambers, Bob Mintzer, Tom Harrell, Steve Grossman or Chaka Khan.
