Kate Nash is a BRIT Award-winning singer-songwriter, musician and actress known for her fearless approach to music and unapologetic storytelling. A platinum selling artist with a career spanning over a decade, she has garnered critical acclaim for her chart-topping hits and electrifying live performances. From her debut album Made of Bricks to her latest releases, Kate’s artistry continues to resonate with audiences and has earned her a dedicated fanbase. She also captivated audiences as Rhonda in Netflix’s Emmy-nominated GLOW.Kate Nash loves her words. These journeys inside her head via long intimate lines, make it clear that lyrics are where her energy as a songwriter lies. Aided by string arrangements, varied tempos, and striking arrangements from collaborator Frederik Thaaes, her words on 9 Sad Symphonics ascend to a new level from the opening track “Millions of Heartbeats.” “There’s a numbness inside of me,” she shares before pondering, “There are no guarantees/ What are my boundaries?” Nash moves into the nitty gritty of relationship warfare in “Wasteman” where handclaps, tasteful synth chords, and a jumpy dancebeat power up revenge lines with an edge: “Took me some time to see/ You’re actually shady/ You fucking take the piss/ I must have been crazy.”
She and Thaaes (who also programs, plays keyboards and co-wrote all but one song) have perfected these varied and effective settings for her vocals. Some work better than others, none more striking musically than the clip-clop rhythms of “Horsie.” In “My Bile,” backed by a full-on galloping beat, the strings stand out as Nash nimbly talks her way through lengthy verses that seem to set her free: “I’ve already explained, I’ve already argued/ I don’t have to be there, I don’t have to tell you/ I don’t have to listen, I don’t have to understand.” Near the album’s finale, the music unexpectedly turns folky on “Ray.” With strummed acoustic guitar “Tick tick tick in my head/ Do I really wish that I was dead?” before revealing a personal battle, Nash shares, “Every day just starting with bad news/ Is a battle with depression that I’ll lose/ No I can’t live that way, keep anxieties at bay/ With music.” By song’s end, however, she’s doing the work to change: “I know I can be a ray of sunshine/ Anytime I wanna see a rainbow I just have to cry/ Let me work it out, let me work on my mind/ I know I can get there if I give myself a little time.” Nash turns towards positively twangy in “Vampyre,” closing the album’s mountain of words on a positive note, “Turns out you were under my nose/ You were the one.” – Robert Baird
