Ultraviolet is the first Warp album from New York-based composer, producer and keyboardist Kelly Moran, ripe with dazzling inflexions of jazz and dream pop, classical composition and black metal.
Ultraviolet transforms her wealth of inspirations into a sound all her own, seemingly pulling off a nearly impossible feat: the annihilation of experimental music’s imposing, esoteric, über-academic status quo in the name of pure, unbridled intuition, of human joy, in her own words “By re-examining my process as an artist, I freed myself.”
While those familiar with Kelly Moran’s music were most likely caught in the web she spun on her 2017 album Bloodroot, Ultraviolet builds upon her perfectly crafted and innovative use of piano and electroacoustic instruments, purpose-built by Moran herself. Having made an early name for herself in New York collaborating with dance performance and composing for long-term John Cage collaborator Margaret Leng Tan, while recent months have seen her perform in prestigious venues around the world as part of Oneohtrix Point Never’s live Age Of tour ensemble.
For those prepared to dive beneath the surface and explore her sound world, Kelly Moran’s music is operating within its entirely own microcosm, one that when experienced in full makes her signing to Warp feels like a perfect match.
