If you wandered into a Kyra Gordon “House Concert” show, you’d be struck by the powerful vocals, deft touch on the keyboard, and command of the room. Watching her perform original songs with disarmingly personal lyrics, punctuated with spoken tales from her extensive travels, you’d feel the conviction of a singer, songwriter, and storyteller with a firm grasp of her creative voice, an artist who has arrived. It’s how she got there that sets her apart.Her quest began at age 15, when she left home with dreams of acting in Hollywood. Disillusionment didn’t come quickly, but amidst the uphill struggle to land even the smallest parts, Kyra eventually came to a discouraging realization. She was striving for something that she didn’t actually want. “I felt stuck there,” says Gordon. “One night, I looked through a bunch of scripts and thought I don’t even like these TV shows.” Her artistic hunger undiminished, she started exploring new ideas. On a sojourn in New Orleans, a chance encounter produced an invitation to a music festival in North Carolina. There she met members of Zendik Farm, an artist’s commune that evangelized a pure form of artistic expression, a sort of anti-Hollywood. She jumped at the opportunity and spent a few years with the group. But at Zendik, in an ironically similar manner to Hollywood, she once again found herself playing a character she didn’t like, from a script that rang false.
