Lahav Shani conducts the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in a recording of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, Op. 56, “Scottish.” This album also includes the overture “Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt” (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage) and orchestrated versions of three of Mendelssohn’s “Lieder ohne Worte”. Warner Classics notes that the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Lahav Shani open the album with Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony. The symphony was inspired by Mendelssohn’s visit to Great Britain in 1829. Lahav Shani is also the music director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and they have performed this program in the past, says McCallum Theatre including the “Scottish” Symphony and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. The “Scottish” Symphony was inspired by Mendelssohn’s tour of Scotland with Karl Klingemann, and he wrote, “I think I have found there the beginning of my ‘Scottish’ Symphony,” upon seeing the ruins of Queen Mary’s castle.
