Öppet Två presents saxophonist Lars-Göran Ulander, who made a great impression on the curator of this series in 1982 during a solo concert as part of an art exhibition. Mats describes it as “sound phrases that related interactively to the visual art he had in front of him. Sound and image created electricity in the room. Energy and friction.”
In 1963, when Lars-Göran Ulander was 20 years old, he became a member of the sextet of the successful Umeå trombonist Lars Lystedt. After that, he was active in various constellations, e.g. in his own septet, in various bands together with drummer Sten Öberg and in a brilliant trio with pianist Per Henrik Wallin. Ulander has also worked as a teacher and was head of the Swedish Radio’s jazz program for many years. Since his retirement, he has become increasingly active in music and still plays in several bands.
For this very first portrait recording of Ulander, musician Mats Gustafsson and Roger Bergner from the Center for Swedish Folk Music & Jazz Research have selected various archive recordings from the 1960s and 70s. Jazz researcher Jan Bruer and drummer Peter Olsen also collaborated, all in close cooperation with Lars-Göran Ulander himself.
