After her critically acclaimed previous album “Love On The Rocks”, Lauren Anderson is now releasing her third self-produced album “Burn It All Down” on September 9th. And again, prominent support in the form of Albert Castiglia and John Salaway (has played with Peter Frampton, Zach Williams, The Zombies and many others) is on board. While “Love On The Rocks” has almost exclusively focused on calm and thoughtful tones, their new record is much tougher and should therefore appeal above all to the friends of a more rock-oriented blues, although their musical range on this record also includes beautiful blues numbers with a slight Americana influence (“I Know” and “Still Here”) and even an almost radio-compatible, light-footed midtempo pop song (“Never Too Late”).
But first, the disc starts pretty wildly with the title song “Burn It Down”, a rocking sound with a piano hammer that literally whips the song forward in a sweaty way. And the hard rocking “Soul Is Mine” with Anderson’s megaphone-like vocals is stylistically reminiscent of long gone Led Zeppelin times. On the other hand, the boogie-woogie “Zombie Blues” with Albert Castaglia as guest guitarist is quite different, but no less cool. With the following tracks it is a little less rocky, but still fast, too. The opening is the melodious and inviting Americana shuffle “Lose My Head”, followed by the midtempo blues “Tell Me Baby”.
Before Lauren Anderson finally turns to pure blues on her new record with the already mentioned, bittersweet “Still Here”, the blues ballad “Fool” and the sad slow blues “Rain Down On Me”, John Salaway is as another guest guitarist in the hard Chicago rock (strong bass line!) hear. The album finally ends with the vigorously stomping “Like A Woman” accompanied by sawing guitar riffs.
With “Burn It All Down” Lauren Anderson has released an energetic, rocking (and varied) album, which is stylistically completely different from the quieter previous album “Love On The Rocks”. But as she says so aptly: “If you want to build a new house, you have to tear down the old one first.“ The only constant is her powerful alto voice, sometimes slightly rough sounding and sometimes reminiscent of Joplin, which gives the songs a special touch and depth.
