“It was a humble project that is almost a year in the making – exploring the countries of Turkey, meeting their generous and warm people, listening to their stories, their instruments and working with the wonderful Alice Ping Yee Ho to capture the sounds, scents, landscapes and memories of my parents’ hometown – Hunan and Heilongjiang. A reflection on heritage and nostalgia, the album by Tong Wang and Leah Plave, Black Sea, Orange Tree, tells the story of train rides through the Himalayas, ancient folk dances and ruwigen bar battles, glittering golden temples and the smell of Teebl Composer Fazil Says “Four Cities” and Alice Ping Yee Ho’s “Four Impressions of China” weave special techniques into lush melodies that sometimes wonderfully transform cello and piano into traditional Turkish and Chinese instruments.”
