With one foot firmly in the American jazz tradition and the other covered in Nordic frost, Little North returns with the next step in their sonic expedition.

Barely a year after the release of the critically acclaimed “Finding Seagulls” which marked them as a one-to-watch in the jazz world, the young Danish trio releases “Familiar Places” (21st Jan, April Records).

The album expands – quite literally – on the group’s raw energy and warmth, with the adventurous addition of Swedish indie guitar prodigy Viktor Spasov and trumpeter Kasper Tranberg on a number of tracks.

But whilst the guests add another layer to the music, the core essence of the piano trio shines through; intricate interplay, deep grooves and delicate melodies that are shared between the three musicians.

Another Nordic jazz trio?!? No, Little North is not just a gratuitous addition to the ranks of what some see as a genre in its own right. There is a rather unique depth to the music of the young Danish trio. On Familiar Places, pianist Benjamin Nørholm Jacobsen, drummer Lasse Jacobsen and bassist Martin Brunbjerg Rasmussen have invited their fellow countryman trumpeter Kasper Tranberg (Calystegia) and the Swedish-Bosnian guitarist Viktor Spasov (Running Down the Park, Push and Ind i det Azurblå) onto the album. Something to enrich their highly cinematic and lyrical jazz… Once again, Little North puts greater emphasis on the outlines of their tunes than on the strength of their rhythm. They also put greater emphasis on warm sounds that make their soundscapes highly hypnotic. And on his three performances, Spasov, who is not a ‘pure’ jazz musician, adds a new depth to the music of his Danish friends. Above all, with Familiar Places, Little North overcome a real artistic obstacle that will hopefully allow them to extend their presence well beyond the Nordic territories. – Marc Zisman
