If Los Bitchos’ electrifying 2022 debut album ‘Let the Festivities Begin!’ Was the rowdy build up to the big night out, then ‘Talkie Talkie’ is the Technicolor explosion of the dancefloor. Made up of lead guitarist Serra, who carries both Australian and Turkish heritage, Uruguayan synth and keytar player Agustina Ruiz, Swedish bassist Josefine Jonsson and British drummer Nic Crawshaw, the group are united by a commitment to having fun. It’s a contagious energy they’ve had no problem transmitting to the world: since the band officially arrived in 2019 with two sell-out 7-inch singles, they marked themselves as one of London’s brightest bands to watch.Based in London, the members of Los Bitchos hail from Australia, Uruguay, Sweden and England—and play largely instrumental music inspired by Argentine cumbia, Anatolian rock, Peruvian chicha and American pop. “I wanted to sound like Van Halen and Cocteau Twins—but from Turkey,” founding member and guitarist Serra Petale (the Aussie) has said. Turns out that is a winning alchemy. Talkie Talkie, the band’s second album, is a wild, electrifying ride and full of left-field surprises. “Road” is a yacht-rock breeze with a sly, crafty air thanks to Nic Crawshaw’s (the Brit by birth) artfully bruising drums that recall Kate Schellenbach’s work in Luscious Jackson. “Don’t Change” channels an island holiday in the sun, with sweeping synth—courtesy of Agustina Ruiz (the Uruguayan)—and spaced-out, Santana-style riffage. With fierce hi-hat and slithering guitar, “Kiki, You Complete Me” evokes ’70s cop shows and, in the words of the band, “the opening sequence of a comic book series. The tom sounds we went for are outrageous, like the ‘pows’ and ‘thwacks’ of a comic strip punctuating the music … think Batman meets Bitchos!” A power-bass line from Josefine Jonsson (the Swede) steals the show—which is a big job. Jonsson and Crawshaw’s deep, elastic rhythm is eloquent, too, on “Talkie Talkie, Charlie Charlie.” Equally heavy is opener “Hi!”—a thick slice of exaggeratedly funky lounge, its slick and shiny guitar hitting up against fuzzy percussion. The song gleefully ends with some of the only words on the record: “Suck on that one, biiiitch.” “1K!” taps into cumbia with see-sawing guiro and mystical guitar. Scampering “La Bomba” is infused with Turkish psych-rock circa the 1980s as well as Atari-esque bleeps and bloops. “Open the Bunny—Wasting My Time” goes all in on dub-punk beats. And “Naughty Little Clove” is pure caffeine. – Shelly Ridenour
