When Michael Sanderling took up the post of principal conductor with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra in 2021, it marked the beginning of a collaboration that has attracted worldwide attention. The first, impressive discographic fruits are now revealed in the form of a complete recording of Johannes Brahms’ four symphonies: summit works of music history, recorded against the alpine backdrop of Lake Lucerne, on whose shores the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra resides as Switzerland’s oldest and most renowned symphony orchestra – in the Culture and Convention Center (KKL), which was completed in 1998 and is famous for its phenomenal acoustics.”The location of Lucerne, the central city of Switzerland, creates a connection to Brahms,” says Michael Sanderling. “The proximity to the mountains, the location on beautiful Lake Lucerne, I can hear all of that in Brahms’ symphonic music.” Indeed, the composer was inspired by his repeated sojourns in Switzerland; echoes of which are found not least in the famous “Alphorn Theme” of his first symphony. Fittingly, the recording of the four symphonies is complemented by Arnold Schoenberg’s orchestral version of Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 1. With his subtle arrangement, Schoenberg has created a work of his own quality: It could almost be considered the fifth symphony of his great 19th-century colleague.
