Macha Gharibian, pianist with Armenian roots, singer, composer and daughter of musician Dan Gharibian (founder of the successful band “Bratsch”) mixes multiple influences from jazz, world and folk music on her CD “Mars”.
She began composing theatre music at the age of 20 and combines her pieces with works by Rachmaninov or Oliver Messiaen. In 2005, as a result of a trip to New York, she discovered new musical horizons and discovered for herself the world of improvisation with New York jazz musicians such as Jason Moran, Ralph Alessi, Ravi Coltrane, and others …
Between 2006 and 2008 she was on the road with the band “Bratsch”, which at that time consisted of a 19-member ensemble. She played on several stages in Europe and North America. Invited to the American Dance Festival in New York in 2009, she worked improvisationally on a “New Russian Choreography” by the ensemble Artlink.
Back in France, she also had the desire to emphasize her Armenian roots more strongly again. On the current album “Mars” she combines newly arranged, traditional Armenian folk songs with jazz and pop influences, which always gently merge with a modern European sound.
Macha Gharibian tells us about her travels in her mysterious, contemporary compositions and takes us into the world of the Orient, accompanies us through the plain that the shadow of Mount Ararat casts and into the middle of the vibrant life of Brooklyn. A rousing and very personal musical universe!
