When it came to setting his poems to music, Goethe was rather conservative and preferred the now-forgotten settings by Carl Friedrich Zelter, while he could do nothing with Schubert’s congenial realizations. The Norwegian mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland and her accompanist Nils Anders Mortensen present some of these undisputed highlights in Schubert’s song oeuvre.
