This program is characterized by refinement of sound and French esprit – for example, when Maurice Ravel tells of the love of this ancient couple in Daphnis et Chloé. With a sometimes delicate, sometimes archaic and austere tonal language, he depicts shy falling in love, forced separation and a happy reunion. The Concertino by Germaine Tailleferre with solo harpist Marie-Pierre Langlamet is impressionistic and virtuosic. Conductor Juanjo Mena opens the evening with the overture Ramuntcho by Gabriel Pierné.Without her father’s permission, the young Germaine Tailleferre secretly took piano and solfège lessons at the Paris Conservatoire, where her talent was recognized and encouraged. She became the only female member of the infamous Groupe des Six, which formed around 1920 in the Parisian artists’ quarter of Montmartre. The composer wrote her Concertino for harp and orchestra a few years later in Manhattan, where she lived in a short marriage. The classically styled piece is based on Mozart’s concertos; at the same time, Tailleferre wrote “music of such freshness – one could say that it smells good” (Darius Milhaud). Marie-Pierre Langlamet – a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker since 1993 – presents the solo part of one of today’s most popular harp concertos of the 20th century.

When Juanjo Mena made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2016, the conductor, known for his razor-sharp readings, also created a work for harp and orchestra together with Marie-Pierre Langlamet – embedded in a program that highlighted the mutual influences between Spain and France. The overture at the beginning of his second program also addresses this connection: French composer Gabriel Pierné set Pierre Loti’s novel of the same name to music in the stage work Ramuntcho, which is considered a declaration of love to the Basque country.
