Pianist Martha Argerich and cellist Mischa Maisky perform compositional works by Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann on this audiophile release. The reissue of classical music masterpieces by ESOTERIC has attracted a lot of attention, both for its uncompromising commitment to recreating the original master sound to improve sound quality. This series marks the first hybrid SACD release of historical recording selections that have been mainstays of the catalog since their initial release.
Martha Argerich notoriously shies away from playing Schubert’s music. There hasn’t been much survey of Schubert since her collaboration with Mischa Maisky in 1985 yielding a wonderful recording of the Arpeggione Sonata. Only until recent years, she began to perform Schubert’s later work including Variations D. 913, Fantasie for 4 hands D.940 and this beautiful reading of Rondo in A, D.951.
