The British music magazine Gramophone wrote about Martin James Bartlett’s album Rhapsody from 2022: “It shows an outstanding piano talent in top form with a repertoire for which he clearly has an affinity”. The same could also be said of Bartlett’s current album La Danse, the pianist reports on its creation: “The idea for the program came from two contrasting components, my love of Rameau’s Gavotte et doubles and Ravel’s La Valse”.The piano works that Martin James Bartlett spans on his album La Danse range from French Baroque to Impressionism. But the pieces of music all have one thing in common: they are dances, sometimes more, sometimes less explicit. The Brit confesses: “I’m a terrible dancer. The only way I can explore this medium is by making music!”. So the much-praised musician lets his fingers dance and unites opposites on the recording that have a lot in common. Couperin’s Les barricades mistérieuses, with its light-footed chord breaks, already seems to carry impressionism within it. Le tombeau de Couperin, on the other hand, was an opportunity for Ravel to invent French Baroque dances in the Impressionist manner. And for the four-hand rarity Le ruban dénoué by Reynaldo Hahn, Bartlett enlisted the help of his French colleague Alexandre Tharaud, another great in his field.
