New sounds from silence: A deep look inside. As a possibility of reduction, of concentration on the essentials in this strange time of silence. Martin Kälberer dared him to look out from there and to become aware of his view of things and the world in a completely new way.
He formulates this in a very personal way on his new double album “InSightOut”, which is released by Jazzhaus Records.
The months since the lockdown have not passed without a trace on Martin Kälberer either. He was on the” home stretch ” of a longer tour together with Werner Schmidbauer and Pippo Pollina, when almost from one day to the next everything suddenly stopped. The remaining concerts cancelled, until further notice no more dates. Silence. A very different kind of silence from the one that had inspired him to start his Baltasound project pushed him into his music studio, which he didn’t feel locked in.
On the contrary, in the last weeks and months a whole album has been produced in Kälberer’s studio at home, in peace and quiet, with unusual leisure, without time constraints, with all possibilities of reflection, listening, checking again and again, sometimes returning to the starting point, a document of this unusual time. It was recorded almost exclusively on the grand piano, which, sometimes pure and incredibly close, sometimes prepared and distorted, sometimes played with hands and brooms on the strings, always reflects the respective mood.
Martin Kälberer describes the situation as follows: “After the first total irritation, I tried to take the opportunity to ‘absorb’ this absolutely unique situation, its own silence and as unusual as unfamiliar seclusion as what it is (in a double sense). A new order of paradigms, a new experience of being and creating. Sounds a little high-sounding and lofty-but it’s not at all. It is more an attempt to describe this borderline experience, and that is what it became in the music that emerged. This certainly has a philosophical dimension, but also a very practical one. So, for example, a piano piece was created, you can call it a kind of meditation on a theme, of 16 minutes in length, in the phase of total lockdown, in which not even the piano tuner was allowed to come to me – and you can hear that, of course. But I chose this version of the theme (although there are some other versions of it). Also because it is a document of this moment, this state. I have not done any streaming concerts, I have not done any substitute or online events – so many of which neither in form nor content can satisfy even approximately what one can experience or convey at a concert – on the contrary, I have tried to listen deeply into myself and to make sound what I have heard there (amplified by the situation).“
