This program springs from the desire to immerse oneself in a succession of short and idiomatic musical forms that can “evoke” the expressive nuances of the protagonists of the Spanish national school that developed between the 19th and 20th centuries. The deep voice of the cello and the brilliance of the guitar blend perfectly in this repertoire to recall the flavor, the cultural world and the expressive spirit from which it was born, underlying on every page the stories and the weave of its protagonistsThe first pioneers of this Iberian impressionism were the famous pianists and composers Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909) and Enrique Granados (1897-1966). They were Catalans and representatives of a national music that was given a European touch by their stays in Paris and the rich cultural life in Barcelona of that time. Both manage with their pianos to show a Spain from the outside. The popular pieces for piano (or for voice and piano, as in Elegia Eterna) gathered here evoke colors and sounds that transcend the instrument; they recall the dances, the folk songs, the nocturnal moods, the cante jondo, and the voice of the guitar itself to such an extent that the following lively transcriptions by guitarists such as Tarrega, Llobet, and Segovia gave rise to the popular misconception that these pieces were created primarily for the guitar.
The guitar therefore presents itself from the outset as the ideal instrument for this repertoire, but the expressive intensity of the cello not only combines perfectly with the sound of the six strings, but also seems to imbue the singing with a fluidity, richness and narrative intensity that no transcription for solo guitar could ever fully support.
