Gratitude is the fifteenth studio album by American singer Mary J. Blige. It was released on November 15, 2024, through 300 Entertainment and her Mary Jane Productions imprint.In early 2024, Mary J. Blige teased that Gratitude—her 15th studio album—could be her swan song. But now she says there’s more to come, and it certainly doesn’t sound like she’s running out of steam or material. Eight years on from a divorce, the singer is just now figuring out what that meant for her long-term and accepting that it’s OK to put herself first, as on the song “Breathing.” Fabolous sets it up, the familiar break from The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Kick in the Door” (the same one he borrowed from Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell On You”) locks into place, and you know Blige means business. “Don’t Fuck Up” finds her laying on the compliments for a new lover and counting the ways they make her feel special, before issuing a “no more drama” warning. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul taps Jadakiss to growl and fuzz up the bridge of “Need You More”—a song that positively glows, slip-sliding over a sample of En Vogue’s “Hold On” and stirring up a disco breeze. “Beautiful People,” produced by Kaytranada, channels that same welcome energy. And teaming with DJ Cassidy was an inspired choice. He brings brand-new rubber band bounce to “Never Give Up On Me,” layering on the yacht-soul flourishes of horns and strings like topping off a glass of Moët. He also injects a frisky, feel-good energy to “I Got Plans,” as does guest A$AP Ferg. The album is bookended with its liveliest tracks and drags a bit in the middle—with songs like the slow jam “Superpowers,” smooth “You Ain’t the Only One” and silky ballad “Nobody But You” (which channels a bit of mid-’90s-era Mary J.) feeling pretty similar. But near the end, Fat Joe intros a buoyant “God’s Child” and blessed Blige looks back at where she came from and what she’s been through—and says a little prayer for those who didn’t make it with her. “All this property in my name now/ Crazy how things have changed now,” she sings. “You can catch me dancing in the rain now/ I’m making millions off my pain now.” – Shelly Ridenour
