Massimo La Rosa joined The Cleveland Orchestra as principal trombone in September 2007. He made his solo debut with the Orchestra in a gala concert in October 2011 performing Ferdinand David’s Trombone Concertino under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. He was named “New Artist of the Month” by Musical America following the release of his solo recording, Cantando.Mr. La Rosa served as principal trombone of La Fenice Opera House 1996-2007. He also performed as principal trombone of the Saito Kinen Festival Orchestra in Japan, La Scala Opera in Milan, and the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome. As a concerto soloist, Mr. La Rosa has performed with La Fenice Orchestra, Sicilian Symphonic Orchestra of Palermo, Campinas Symphony in Brazil, and the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own.”
Massimo La Rosa is a member of the faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music and has presented recitals and masterclasses at major conservatories in the United States, Europe, Japan, and South America. As a Bach Trombone Artist, he recently worked with Conn-Selmer Inc. to develop a new Bach Artisan Trombone with the Massimo La Rosa (MLR-03) Valve.
Born in Palermo, Italy, Massimo La Rosa grew up in Belmonte Mezzagno, a small town near Palermo. He attended the Conservatory of Music in Palermo, where he studied with Filippo Bonanno. Mr. La Rosa is committed to playing for social causes and has recently performed several benefit recitals in collaboration with the Italian Consulate in Cleveland and Detroit to raise money to benefit the ANFE Light of Life Foundation, an organization that provides financial assistance and treatment for children with retinal disorders.
