For his debut recording with Ad Fontes, Matthew Martin has put together a concert featuring two of the greatest organists and composers of 20th century France. Duruflé, a notorious perfectionist, looked for inspiration in his deep faith and the great lineage of French composers – Debussy, Dukas, Fauré and Ravel. A passionate voice of the avant-garde, Alain developed his own distinctive language before his tragic death in 1940 at the age of just 29. This prompted Duruflé to compose a Prelude and Fugue, a la mémoire de Jehan Alain, mort pour la France, in memory of his friend. Matthew Martin had spent much of his life singing Gregorian chant – which also has a noticeable influence on the music of this memorial pair – and was himself a pupil of the late Marie-Claire Alain in Paris, which gave him rare insights into her brother’s music. The vibrant sound and timbre of Buckfast Abbey’s Ruffatti organ is the ideal medium for this program, expertly captured in a building that lives and breathes the music.
