Julian Clifton ‘Matty’ Matlock (April 27, 1907 – June 14, 1978) was an American Dixieland jazz clarinettist, saxophonist and arranger born in Paducah, Kentucky. From 1929 to 1934 Matlock replaced Benny Goodman in the Ben Pollack band writing arrangements and performing on clarinet. Matlock began his professional career playing with the Beasley Smith band for five years before replacing Benny Goodman in the Ben Pollack Orchestra in 1929. Five years later, he joined Bob Crosby’s band, with whom he achieved fame as an arranger and soloist, and became known for March of the Bobcats, Paducah Parade, and Sugar Daddy Strut. After leaving Crosby’s band in 1942, Matlock came to Hollywood where he worked in radio and television, performing with Jack Teagarden, Billy May and Bobby Hackett. He appeared as a featured musician in Pete Kelly’s Blues with Jack Webb. He is widely credited for having perfected the style of dixieland arranging.
