Welcomed on the Blue Note label from 2022 in the collective album Blue Note Re:imagined II inviting a sample of artists from the new British scene to revisit some themes drawn from her catalog (in this case Neil Young’s Harvest Moon in Cassandra Wilson’s cover) — the London guitarist, singer, songwriter Maya Delilah took her time to develop and refine her debut album but the wait was worth it. Because the 24-year-old young artist succeeds in the challenge in The Long Way Round of both proposing an original program multiplying references and exploring all the genres and styles that she has fed on throughout her years of learning without the whole falling into the catalog or the exercise of deferential style.
What Maya Delilah affirms from the outset through these twelve songs highlighting obvious melodist and lyricist talents, is a poetic universe and a very personal and immediately identifiable sound signature. Passing according to the beaches and its partners from the wadded and melancholic dream pop (Look At The State Of Me Now or Did I Dream It All produced by Ben Fletcher and Tom Higham of Aquilo) to the “princely” funk with nu soul (Squeeze), from the vaporous country pop crossed by incandescent guitar solos with assumed Seventies accents (Begin Again, Man of the House) to the cottony instrumental ballad illuminated by the sensualist organ of Cory Henry ( Jeffrey), Maya Delilah, crossing the whole of her slightly sluggish voice with sulky charm and expertly nonchalant phrasing, draws the contours of an intimate, nostalgic and fragile world of great aesthetic and emotional coherence.Introduced to Blue Note in 2022 through the collection, Blue Note Re:imagined II, which invited a cross-section of artists from the new British scene to revisit a number of themes drawn from the label’s catalog (Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” covered by Cassandra Wilson, for example), London-based guitarist and singer-songwriter Maya Delilah took her time in developing her debut album, but the wait was well worth it. In The Long Way Round, the 24-year-old presents an entirely original repertoire, multiplying references and exploring all of the genres and styles she has come across during her years of learning, without falling back on a catalog or dutiful stylistic exercises.
Maya Delilah’s twelve songs, which reveal her evident talent as a melodist and lyricist, immediately assert her highly personal and instantly identifiable poetic universe and signature sound. Depending on the track and her collaborators, she moves from wispy, melancholy dream pop (“Look At The State Of Me Now” or “Did I Dream It All,” produced by Ben Fletcher and Tom Higham of Aquilo) to “princely” funk mixed with nu soul (“Squeeze”); from steamy country pop with unabashedly seventies incandescent guitar solos (“Begin Again,” “Man of the House”) to the cottony instrumental ballad illuminated by Cory Henry’s sensualist organ (“Jeffrey”). With her slightly atonal voice, consisting of sulky charm and cleverly nonchalant phrasing, she draws the contours of an intimate, nostalgic and fragile world, made up of great aesthetic and emotional coherence. This album is a true success. – Stéphane Ollivier
