Megan Sullivan McInerney, known by her stage name Meg Mac, is an Australian singer-songwriter and musician. “Low Blows” is her debut full-lenght release. The album was recorded in Texas in the US and Victoria, Australia. Low Blows is a triumph of bold, unique songwriting which bodes incredibly well for Mac’s future as an artist, at home and on the world stage.
Her debut EP got a Best Female Artist nod from the 2015 ARIA Music Awards, the same year that McInerney toured the US with D’Angelo, and she’s definitely aiming higher again with her debut LP.
The first track, Grace Gold, makes an instant impression with a mix to match McInerney’s impressive vocal — driven by chest-rumbling drums and bass and shot through quick electric stabs of funky guitar. It would almost be enough to make you wonder how close this album was to being named after the opener if the subsequent title-track Low Blow wasn’t packed with all the same qualities in equal measure. They are both mega catchy and, most importantly, big without being bombastic. It’s a quality that McInerney has shown from the start and she seems to have just about perfected at Niles City Sound in Texas, showing the confidence and experience to rely on her abilities instead of trying to blow them out of proportion. McInerney keeps delivering on all the neo-soul promise of those first two singles — if this isn’t the cut that makes her an international household name the one that does likely won’t be far off.
