Am I Okay? is the massively anticipated sophomore album from breakout Country superstar Megan Moroney, and is an up-close look at the life-changing pain of heartbreak and the glory of moving on. As she doubles down on the gorgeously detailed storytelling of her blockbuster full-length debut Lucky, the Georgia-bred singer/songwriter lights up every track with her signature balance of raw emotional honesty and warmhearted sensitivity—as well as the endless supply of down-to-earth charm that’s made her one of Country music’s most dynamic new stars.
A truly gifted songwriter, Moroney also brings a tremendous depth to Am I Okay?’s more fun-loving moments, such as “Indifferent”: a wildly euphoric track that weaves whistled melodies and pounding drumbeats through her full-tilt celebration of breaking free from infatuation with an old love. The album leaves the listener both undeniably dazzled and more deeply connected to the full expanse of their own emotional life.
Am I Okay?’s finespun songwriting and high-powered sound is achieved with the help of Moroney’s longtime producer Kristian Bush (Sugarland).Coming just over a year after the release of her debut, Lucky (and the shooting-star single “Tennessee Orange”), Megan Moroney’s Am I Okay? continues her winning streak. Her voice is already a stand-out in Nashville, with that appealing wild-honey rasp and soft Georgia drawl, and she sounds terrific on the summer-rocker title track and classic country of “Third Time’s a Charm.” There’s grit and beauty here, not a quest for over-produced perfection. (Hat tip to Kristian Bush of Sugarland, who helms the board once again.) Songs like the liberated “Indifferent”—terrific kick-in, big guitars—have Shania-style crossover potential, but are still definitively country. Moroney can capably do melodrama (the strings-laden “Mama, I Lied”), pained balladry (“Heaven by Noon” finds her sounding like a young Bonnie Tyler) and boot-scooting sass: “Man on the Moon”—as in, send this loser guy to outer space (“But can somebody call NASA/ Or a billionaire with money to burn”)—is catchy fun, with thunderclap drums, and clearly channels Sheryl Crow. Working with the likes of Shane McAnally, Liz Rose and Luke Laird, Moroney is also a talented songwriter who makes reminiscing about a high-school love (“Noah”) sweet and catchy and turns the pain of a once-important anniversary (“28th of June”) into a jewel-box piano ballad. But more than anything else, Moroney, who sounds like she’s endured plenty of heartache and just plain romantic annoyance, is for the girls. In fact, there’s a Miranda Lambert-esque tribute to her friends called “The Girls.”
Am I Okay? is the right record right now for being twentysomething and loving your friends and feeling unsure about what’s going on with romance. (But that doesn’t mean everybody else can’t love it, too.) “I’d have probably picked her too … hell it could’ve been worse/ At least my whole world left me for Miss Universe,” she sings—self-deprecatingly, but with good humor—about losing out to a beauty queen on chugging “Miss Universe.” “Keep your half-ass ‘Sorry, how you been?'” she tells a late-night would-be Romeo on “No Caller ID.” She wishes an ex all the best, as long as it’s from a safe distance (“I hope you’re happy, I hope I never know”) on “Hope You’re Happy.” “Am I Okay? is the title track of my album, and it just felt fitting because I think the album is an emotional roller coaster …” Moroney has said. “At the beginning, you’re like, ‘[Is she] okay?’ And then by the end, it’s like, ‘Oh, I don’t think she is.'” Indeed, the records ends with the stripped-bare acoustic track, “Hell of a Show,” about having everything in the world—a sold-out concert with her name on the marquee, fans holding homemade signs—but also the pain of “I’m onstage in 20/ And he’s so damn mean to me.” There’s a moment when the song stops and Moroney audibly sighs to catch her breath, and it’s a gut kick. – Shelly Ridenour
