Michael Patrick Kelly – iD (2018) [FLAC 24bit/44,1kHz]

“ID” is a versatile album full of power and positive energy. Titles such as the opener “Golden Age”, “Friends R Family” or the folksy “Run Jump Fly” go straight into the ear and will develop live to sing along hymns. Also, “Sing my song” has left its mark on the new album: exchange concert colleague Gentleman enriches the title track “ID” with a reggae insert, and “A Little Faith” recalls the rocky country style of The BossHoss.

In between, there are always quieter pieces that often have a spiritual dimension and touch me, such as the haunting “Requiem” or “Land of Bliss”, Patrick’s very own interpretation of the Song of Solomon from 1 Corinthians. An emotional highlight of the album creates the wonderful ballad “So Beautiful”, reinforced by the instrumental reprise. Shortly thereafter, Patrick proves with “Lazarus” that he can really rock. And he closes the album with the grim “Last Words”, which begins with the fateful words “I killed the president, because he was an enemy often the people” and left the listener very thoughtful.

Patrick Michael Kelly is a musician with body and soul. He sings about what matters to him and packs his messages into great songs that reach the soul, even if you do not pay close attention to the lyrics. I can listen to him for hours – and I suspect that most listeners to this great album are the same. Keep it up, Paddy!
