For more than 25 years, My Morning Jacket have achieved an incredibly rare feat in rock & roll, upholding a long-established cultural legacy while sustaining the curiosity and creative hunger of their earliest days. For their 10th studio album, the band teamed up with GRAMMY Award-winning producer Brendan O’Brien (Springsteen, Pearl Jam) for what may be their most masterfully realized work yet, once again expanding the limits of their sound while elevating their artistry to unprecedented heights. CD Softpak with booklet.Producer Brendan O’Brien, known for his big beat collaborations with the Black Crowes, Bruce Springsteen, and Pearl Jam, has added volume, space, and focus to My Morning Jacket’s sound, which in recent years had wandered into fuzziness. Charged by this fresh perspective, the band sidelined most of the 100 songs they had already demoed for is. According to singer/guitarist Jim James, “We took a lot of the recordings I’d already put my heart and soul into and used that as the framework for the song. Then played live or recorded new things on top of that. It allowed us to retain the magic of when the song first came to be, and then meld that with what we’d created together as a band.”
The effects of O’Brien’s large-scale touches are apparent from the first two tracks, “Out in the Open” and “Half A Lifetime.” The former comes on slow before opening into a love song with a four-on-the-floor dancebeat in the verses while the choruses muse, “Well my feet are in the air/ And my head is on the ground/ And I wonder if I reach out/ Would you even make a sound?” Set to a jerky, insistent rhythm, “Half A Lifetime” lays out is’s M.O.—”And take another listen/ Put the needle on the line/ This motorpsycho prison/ With all its hard rock visions!”
The album’s catchiest number, “Everyday Magic,” works off O’Brien’s blueprint for big, sizzling, wall-of-pop guitar rock. That’s followed by “I Can Hear Your Love,” where a perky, bouncing island beat powers a tune that Roy Orbison might have made into a hit. Fashioned after a looped sample of pedal steel guitar legend Buddy Emmons, “Time Waited” features lyrics that James says came to him after a dream, and “Squid Ink” verges on metal with plenty of thunderous guitar crunch as James chants, “Why can’t I forget your face?” Taking a shot at more accessible relevance, My Morning Jacket makes a convincing case for its mainstream leanings with is. – Robert Baird
