Hailed as “an astonishing talent, with exquisite technique”, Nigel Armstrong was born in Sonoma, California where he began playing the violin at the age of five. Nigel made his orchestra debut in 2002 as a soloist with the Baroque Sinfonia and has since performed concertos with the symphony orchestras in Dusseldorf, Oslo, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Buenos Aires among others. He served as concertmaster for the American Youth Symphony and The Colburn Orchestra when he was a student in Los Angeles.
As a soloist, Nigel remains a personal favorite of Sir Neville Marriner, who looks forward to his next performances with Nigel. After recording the Korngold concerto on this album, Sir Neville and Nigel gave three more performances of the work with orchestras in Europe.
Nigel won the Premio Tango prize at the first international violin competition in Buenos Aires, and the Ole Bull and Nordheim awards in Oslo. Nigel also took first place in the Boston Symphony Orchestra concerto competition. In Moscow in 2011, Nigel won Best Performance of the Commissioned Work by John Corigliano with Stomp and was the only American finalist in the Tchaikovsky International Violin Competition. Mr. Armstrong was profiled in the cover story of the January/February issue of Teen Strings in 2007. He also appeared on NPR’s acclaimed radio program “From the Top.”
Though classical music is Mr. Armstrong’s passion he also enjoys exploring different traditions of musical expression such as jazz, fiddle and tango.

NIGEL ARMSTRONG

Nigel grew up in Sonoma, California and was appreciated as a prodigy from an early age. Nigel earned his bachelor’s degree from The Colburn School where he was a student of the famed Robert Lipsett. Nigel performed well in a series of international violin competitions during his student years and debuted with important orchestras in North and South America and Europe before earning a post graduate diploma from Curtis. comes with innate musicality; his use of color, his musical line, his flair for expression… these come from his body and blood. Unlike some great musicians who can intellectualize “musical intent” in everything they play, Nigel just does it. His playing is supremely intelligent, but he doesn’t let his intellect interfere with his playing. It comes from his body and from his cultivated instincts.
Nigel worked hard to raise his playing to the level of the international concert stage but one can tell this effort came naturally to him. His flexible athletic technique and his innate musicality means he didn’t have to fight with himself to produce his sound and his music. Nigel is a “natural,” and while Nigel plays with technical magnificence, Nigel is not a show off. He doesn’t feel nervous when approaching a threatening passage, he just plays the music and gives us a window into the composer’s soul.

THE COLBURN ORCHESTRA

Celebrating its tenth anniversary season in 2012-2013, the COLBURN ORCHESTRA is the flagship ensemble of the Colburn Conservatory of Music. Under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Yehuda Gilad, the Colburn Orchestra performs for Southern California audiences at venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, Ambassador Auditorium, Royce Hall, Segerstrom Concert Hall and the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge.

Since its inception, Gilad and the esteemed faculty at Colburn have invited leading guest artists to perform with the Colburn Orchestra to mirror a professional orchestral experience. Previous visiting conductors include James Conlon, Jamie Laredo, Sir Neville Marriner, Kurt Masur, Nicolas McGegan, and Esa-Pekka Salonen, among others. Guest soloists include violinists Joshua Bell, Cho-Liang Lin, Elmar Oliveira and Pinchas Zukerman (play/conduct); soprano Elizabeth Hynes; mezzo-sopranos Sasha Cooke and Michelle DeYoung; pianist Vladimir Feltsman and saxophonist Claude Delangle. Esteemed artists such as Mstislav Rostropovich and Itzhak Perlman actively worked with the orchestra during its inaugural year.
