Omer Avital (born May 13, 1971 in Giw’atajim is an Israeli-born jazz bassist, bandleader and composer living in the United States.
Avital first learned to play classical guitar. From the age of 11, he received appropriate training at the Givataim Conservatory. He then attended the Talma Yalin Music High School in Tel Aviv, where his interests turned to jazz and the double bass. He began performing professionally at the age of 17 and moved to New York City after completing his military service. There he performed at the Smalls Jazz Club since it opened in 1994, when he performed with Peter Bernstein and Brad Mehldau. Soon he was performing there with his own sextet, which featured four saxophonists (Mark Turner, Gregory Tardy, Myron Walden, Charles Owens) in the front line and was documented on the album Asking No Permission, recorded in 1996.Avital has since worked with the Jason Lindner Big Band, Avishai Cohen, Alon Yavnai, Aaron Goldberg, Itai Kriss, Omer Klein and Daniel Zamir. He leads his own sextet, with which he has recorded several albums. In 2001, Fresh Sound New Talent released his debut album Think With Your Heart, which featured Gregory Tardy and Joel Frahm, among others. In 2002 he founded the Third World Love Quartet with Avishai Cohen, Yonathan Avishai and Daniel Freedman. The band recorded five albums and performed worldwide. In 2009 he performed with Rashied Ali at the Vision Festival. He currently leads his own quintet, Qantar, with musicians who all have their roots in Israel and which is dedicated to fusing jazz with the diverse sounds of his native country.
