Pedro Lavirgen Gil (born on July 31, 1930 in Bujalance, Andalusia; died on April 2, 2023 in Madrid) was a Spanish operatic tenor. He was one of the greatest singers of his time.
Lavirgen first became a primary school teacher, but then took singing lessons with Miguel Barrosa and Carlota Dahmen. in 1959 he made his debut in Zaragoza in the Zarzuela Marina of Emilio Arrieta. In 1964 he won an international singing competition in Barcelona. In the same year, he made his operatic debut at the Opera of Mexico City – as Radames in Verdi’s Aida. Kutsch/Riemens write that this was the beginning of “a brilliant career, especially at the big theaters in Spain and South America”. Although the main focus of his roles was in the Spinto subject (Radames, Casio, Rodolfo), his repertoire ranged from lyrical parts (Herzog, Edgardo) to the hero subject (Otello, Kalaf). Many years of cooperation connected him with the Teatro Liceu of Barcelona, Lavirgen performed there from 1966 to 1982 – in numerous Verdi roles and also in Zarzuelas. In 1968 he made a guest appearance in Madrid. In North America, he made a single appearance at the Metropolitan Opera (as Cavaradossi in the 1968/69 season) as well as performance series at the opera houses of Philadelphia (including as Pollione alongside Joan Sutherland), Montreal (as Canio) and New Orleans (as Radames). In Latin America he has been seen and heard in Santiago de Chile (as Cavaradossi) and in Buenos Aires (as Arrigo and Don Carlos). He made two guest appearances in Tokyo, as Don José in 1973 and with a Zarzuela troupe from Spain in 1985.
He made his debut in the German-speaking world as early as 1966 at the Vienna State Opera, where he performed regularly until 1980. He sang ten different roles in Vienna, including Don Carlos seven times, Manrico nine times and Canio 16 times. He was also a guest of the State Operas of Munich and Hamburg. In 1981 he took over the title role in Verdi’s Otello at the Spiel am See at the Bregenz Festival. Most of Pedro Lavirgen’s performances took place in Italy. He sang Don José at the Teatro Regio of Turin in 1971, Kalaf at the Teatro San Carlo of Naples in 1972, Kalaf, Don José and Alvaro at the Arena di Verona in 1974, Manrico at the Teatro Margherita of Genoa in 1975 and Don José at the Teatro Comunale of Bologna. In the same year, Lavirgen also made his debut at La Scala in Milan – as Radames and Don José. in 1976 he returned to the Arena di Verona as Radames, in 1979 he took over the Don José at the Sferisterio Opera Festival of Macerata.
In 1970 he appeared as Andrea Chénier at the Dublin Opera. He also performed Don José, one of his signature roles, at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse and at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London in 1976 and at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1978. He also sang the Pollione in London in 1978. He has also made guest appearances in Prague and several times in Budapest.
