2018 collaboration between the singer/songwriter and actress/vocalist, and follow up to their 2009 album ‘Break Up’. Comprised of 5 new recordings, including the single “Bad Dreams” (a cover of Brooklyn-based band The Echo Friendly’s “Worried”), and a new version of “Tomorrow” (previously featured on Yorn’s 2014 album ‘ArrangingTime’). “If Break Up was dealing with an unraveling relationship, Apart is dealing with the aftermath,” Yorn explains. “It acknowledges the array of heavy emotions that come up living separate lives. You’re getting used to the idea of not being with someone who has been a big part of your life.” Scarlett Johansson adds, “Being able to revisit this project with Pete in a totally different context but within the same creative parameters is a unique artistic opportunity for me.”

After a first album from the duo in 2009, (Break Up), Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson are trying again, like a modern-day Gainsbourg and Bardot. Titled Apart, this EP from the double act dazzles with the sheer range between the pieces. Johansson works wonders with Inguana Bird, a light and summery ditty. But an actress who has played heroes in blockbusters called for something a little more intense too. With its retro charms, Bad Dreams perfectly suits our two leads: it’s a dose of genuinely engaging pop. Things settle back down quickly for Moovies, with a touch of sensuality, as Peter Yorn murmurs languorously into the microphone. Johansson brings a sexy allure to the choruses with a very eighties style, and guitar distortions speak of a slow and voluptuous dance. The real world returns with a jolt in the form of the singer’s raw, folk guitar sounds on Cigarillo. But they keep up their assured beat: this track would have worked very well as a summer hit. They close with Tomorrow that Yorn brought out on the album Arranging Time, adding the pop sound that belongs to this EP and to his work with Johansson. – Clara Bismuth
