The great kora luminary from Mal has worked with the Italian-English singer-songwriter on several occasions, and now they have recorded an entire album together for the first time. You won’t hear the beautiful, generally contemplative soundscapes of the Sissoko records, but it still sounds totally peaceful, lyrical, light and often light as a feather, in gentle, bewitchingly melodic songs that sometimes seem a little dreamy, wonderfully sparkling in a completely relaxed flow, even softer in a series of ballad tracks, the brilliant, wonderful kora sounds and an acoustic guitar closely entwined/corresponding (with a stronger emphasis on the kora, i.e. also the West African aspect). The melodies, the songs as such, also draw on both Africa and (mainly English) folk, seamlessly interwoven, but somewhat predominantly the latter. One of the numbers is based on an Italian traditional (very delicately at first, then a careful drive), a few tracks use Vincent Segal’s cello very beautifully and effectively, but above all 2 tracks stand out (and the 2nd half of a third), which prominently use ngoni and gimbri (further guests, from Mali) on the one hand and West African rhythms on the other (which at the same time are given a much stronger status as such), develop a certain trait, seem a bit more offensive/extroverted – great! However, I like “Shadows Are” best, extraordinarily slow and enchanting! A highly recommendable work.
