“Coming Up To Consciousness” is the sixth studio album by Pure Reason Revolution and the third of their Renaissance after the break, which started with “Eupnea” from 2020 and continued with “Above Cirrus” from 2022. Like the two predecessors, the new album is also very personal. The eight tracks are all between four and seven minutes long – short by PRR standards – and they deal with different types of darkness. The band’s distinctive style, which combines prog and pop through dreamy moods, epic riffs and angelic harmonies, has remained. But Courtney and Greg Jong have also tried to take a slightly different path by incorporating influences from Talk Talk, Elliot Smith, The Smile and even Arctic Monkeys in addition to their long-time greats – especially Pink Floyd. Legendary session musician Guy Pratt, who has worked with Pink Floyd, among others, contributed the bass guitar on seven of the eight tracks, while Jon Sykes of The Pineapple Thief played the bass on one song.This sixth album from the British neo-prog outfit — their third since returning from a seven-year hiatus in 2018 — follows 2022’s Above Cirrus. Sparked by frontman Jon Courtney’s bereavement at the loss of his dog, it explores dark themes of betrayal, deception, fear, grief, and mortality. For this album, founder member Chloë Alper is temporarily replaced by Annicke Shireen of Heilung on vocals, with My Vitriol’s Ravi Kesavaram joining on drums and Lesoir’s Ingo Jetten on bass. – TiVo Staff
