In 2022, at the end of a series of performances dedicated to Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), Claudio Cruz (violin), Adonhiran Reis (violin), Gabriel Marin (viola), and Alceu Reis (cello) from the award-winning Carlos Gomes Quartet, decided to record the entirety of Mendelssohn’s string quartets. In this project with the Azul Music label, the first volume is the album Mendelssohn: String Quartets No. 1, 2 & 3. The second one is dedicated to String Quartets Nos 4-6.In a benchmark performance, the renowned Quarteto Carlos Gomes presents the second volume of the series dedicated to Felix Mendelssohn’s string quartets, revealing the complexity and meticulousness inherent in these works.
Comprised of Claudio Cruz (violin), Adonhiran Reis (violin), Gabriel Marin (viola), and Alceu Reis (cello), the musicians bring together in this album String Quartets No. 4, 5, and 6, in a recording that reveals, among other qualities, their profound dedication to the preparation of the pieces and passionate execution. Among the presented works, the impeccable interpretation of Quartet No. 6 stands out, revealing the composer’s deep command of chamber music while also expressively highlighting his distinctive lyricism and remarkable ability to introduce harmonic innovations. This piece stands as a pinnacle in Mendelssohn’s complete works. Conceived during a period of deep mourning, the work sensitively reflects the emotions and context experienced by the composer, being the last major musical work he completed two months before his death.
With a distinguished individual and ensemble résumé celebrated by critics, the Quarteto Carlos Gomes brilliantly and definitively complements the interpretations presented in the inaugural volume. Their dramatic openings, mastery of timbres, and omnipresent musical expertise challenge and expand the boundaries of the repertoire written for these instruments, consolidating their trajectory with this anthological recording of the works.
