Rich Ruth’s ambient voyage on ‘Water Still Flows’, the Nashville-based artist’s heaviest album so far, involves burgeoning loops building to an ambitious mix of kosmiche, spiritual jazz, and electronic drone music. The heaviness of the album is countered by the catharsis reached in each track’s lengthy explorationWater Still Flows is the third studio album from Rich Ruth, an experimental jazz musician based in Nashville, Tennessee. From early ventures performing in bands during his high school years in Toledo, to college and a six-year stint with the Kansas Bible Company, music has been a constant spiritual outlet amid the turbulence of his own life. His first two LPs, Calming Signals and I Survived, It’s Over, were each a means of reaching some form of catharsis after enduring a series of nightmarish events in the period between 2018 and 2022: carjackings at gunpoint, tornadoes flattening his neighbourhood, and a global pandemic, to name a few. This new release—his second on Third Man Records—similarly seeks to resolve personal trauma, but instead grapples with the pressures of being a professional musician in the present day, with all its financial instability, the touring lifestyle, and the mental and physical impacts of these two combined. The music itself vividly reflects these struggles, progressing and fluctuating in energy both within each of the tracks and over the course of the entire album. In his own words, “the soothing quality of these new pieces reflect a constant search for solitude and stability,” whereby “the frenetic heavier parts mirror the tense variability I feel on a regular basis as a working musician.” Influences from kosmische, minimalist and ambient styles manifest throughout the record, as large, reverb-drenched textures and looped synth sequences support virtuosic saxophone melodies and distorted guitar.
