Australian cellist Richard Narroway enjoys an international career as a performer, recording artist, and teacher. His stylistic versatility, innovative programming and wide-ranging musical pursuits have earned him wide acclaim as one of his generation’s most notable artists. His debut album of Bach’s unaccompanied cello suites was described by Gramophone as ‘riveting… an adventure in expressive possibility’, with the cello ‘a messenger of exhilarating and pensive authority in Narroway’s hands.’This new album takes as its centrepiece Peter Sculthorpe’s profoundly moving Requiem for Cello Alone, following the emotional contours of Sculthorpe’s work as it moves from meditative calm to urgency and despair and finally to a state of transcendence. Narroway pairs each of the movements of the Requiem with a work by a different Australian composer that reflects its spirit and essence, from the tranquillity of Kate Moore’s Whoever You Are Come Forth through the more volatile writing of Steve Stelios Adam and Elena Kats-Chernin, through to the cathartic release of Ross Edwards’ Prelude and Laughing Rock, a celebration of Australia’s magnificent landmark, Uluru.

‘In many ways,’ says Narroway, ‘this album represents a kind of COVID story, echoing various dimensions of my own feelings and experiences during the pandemic, moving from peace and tranquility through an unsettling darkness and yearning, then closing with a serene sense of acceptance and calm. While the general mood of this album is contemplative, the prevailing message is one of hope and optimism.’
