If you haven’t experienced the last jazz attack of the year, you’ve really missed something. On Thursday, the young trumpeter and flugelhornist Ryan Carniaux from New York introduced himself in the Jazzkeller, and he did so accompanied by the no longer unknown Mike Roelofs on electric piano, his compatriot Jasper van Hulten on drums, also represented for the first time in the Jazzattack, and the host Stefan Rademacher on bass.
Chet Baker and Miles Davis give Carniaux as role models, but he has earned his spurs in the circle of big band veterans and not only acquired this distinctive, at the same time clear, cool and emotional New York tone, but also developed his own signature. Whether uptempo and in long garlands or worn and picky like a mushroom seeker – oscillating between cool and bop, the Walh-Cologne native enthused without restriction, especially since he celebrated figures who already demand a master on the trumpet, even on the flugelhorn.

The imaginative Roelofs, for his part, dabbed sometimes with a fine brush, sometimes he created an almost orchestral-looking frame, van Hulten dialogued incessantly with both melodies and also captivated in a solo tickled in front of Rademacher, while the latter was in no way inferior to the young people in terms of playing density. The own compositions of the participants formed an ideal basis for varied acting, even meditative pieces trembled with energy, and a permanent increase was felt until after midnight.
