After the release of Control in 2016, a record of refined R&B and well-formulated soul, Rosie Lowe ups the gear with YU. An ambiguous wordplay between “You” and “Why You”, this second album handles the theme of love, a love saved through Rosie and her boyfriend’s attendance of relationship therapy. The Englishwoman’s velvety voice immerses itself more deeply into synths and artificial textures, yet the record remains fundamentally alive and groovy. The Londoner raised in Devon and brought up around Jazz has nothing to hold back. Quite the contrary: Rosie Lowe dedicates Pharoah to saxophonist Pharoah Sanders in which she samples the bass and key parts (Memories of Edith Johnson) and includes certain symbolic passages from the Ancient Egyptian book of the dead which she studied heavily. The comprehensive and varied collaborations, from the universe of experimental rap of Erykah Badu’s ex Jay Electronica to the electro-jazz of Floating Points, allow Lowe to deliver soul that is, without a doubt, in good hands. Beautiful. – Charlotte Saintoin
