On the occasion of Rudolf Serkin’s 120th birthday, Deutsche Grammophon releases Serkin’s last Beethoven recordings for the first time: The two piano sonatas ‘Waldstein’ and ‘Appassionata’, recorded in 1986 and 1989. Due to Serkin’s advanced illness, he was unable to finally approve the tapes at the time. This release of the great Beethoven pianist has now been made possible thanks to the support of Serkin’s daughter Judith Serkin, who also contributed a personal text for the booklet. The recording presents a very personal, wise and tender reading of Beethoven. In addition to numerous photos, the booklet also includes recording protocol and a letter to the recording producer. ‘Rudolf Serkin: Piano Sonatas’ is the first release in the new ‘The Lost Tapes’ series, which brings to light previously unreleased recordings from Deutsche Grammophon’s archives.
