Sam Smith was born in Bishop’s Stortford in 1992 and grew up in the small village of Linton in the English county of Cambridgeshire. While the father took care of Smith and the two younger sisters in the shared house in Great Chishill, the busy mother was very successful as a banker in the financial industry. According to Smith, her great-aunt was already active in banking as one of the first female private bankers.Already in early childhood, Smith was fascinated by female voices and, above all, powerful singers and ballads. At the age of eight, the parents recognized Smith’s great talent and began to promote it. In his early youth, Smith was in the background with the jazz singing teacher Joanna Eden during performances in the capital. Smith was educated at St. Thomas More Primary School and St. Mary’s Catholic School in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire.
Even in his early youth, Smith moved to London for further vocal training at the Youth Music Theatre UK. in 2007, Smith took part in the local singing competition South Coast Idol and won. During an appearance by Adele, at which Smith was in the opening act, contact with a manager was established for the first time. Smith, then 16 years old, did not have his own manager at that time and did not manage to get in touch with him that evening. Only about three years later the cooperation came about through another meeting. It was also thanks to the manager that Smith was able to get acquainted with the songwriter Jimmy Napes and work with him.
