The Tomb of Couperin. Ravel completed the composition of Le Tombeau de Couperin, a cycle dedicated to the piano, in November 1917. This tribute to eighteenth-century French music includes six parts: Prelude, Fugue, Forlane, Rigaudon, Minuet and Toccata. At the origin of this Tomb (Ravel drew with his hand a funeral urn which is printed on the cover page of the original edition), the musician pays tribute to the fallen during the war. Moreover, it evokes the refinement of French classicism, that of Rameau and the Couperins. Ravel’s aim is therefore to magnify the Great Century that he revered. The work opens with the Prelude. The tempo is “lively”. The pianist Vlado Perlemuter, who studied with Ravel, said that Ravel wanted the keyboard to suggest the sound of the oboe. Forlane (allegretto) offers a stricter dance than the previous one. The gentle swaying of the steps and the crossing of the dancers are barely thwarted by the measured stridences of the winds.
The Minuet (allegro moderato) is of a more contemporary melodic inspiration, typical of the harmonies of the twenties. Almost innocuous, this page suddenly becomes more serious. We leave the world of choreography for the drawing of a historical painting imbued with nostalgia before returning to the elegance of the initial movement. The Rigaudon (quite lively) has fun in an ironic way, but however short-lived. The rhythm then imposes a village dance with a solid build and whose sounds belong unreservedly to the writing of the early twentieth century.
