The legendary concert from 2001 at which Sara K. and Günter Pauler met for the first time – and the years of collaboration began. Sara is accompanied on five tracks by Chris Jones, whose encounter also resulted in wonderful recordings.
On 6 April 2001, Sara K. made a guest appearance in Sülbeck, Lower Saxony, near the beer town of Einbeck, as part of her tour of Germany at the time. The inn “Zum Esel” may be remote, but it is an insider’s tip for friends of jazz, singer-songwriter guild, acoustic music and much more. David Lindley, Ringsgwandel, Ralph Towner have already performed here – it is impossible to list all the greats of the decade-long concert scene in the “Esel”.
Sülbeck’s proximity to Northeim suggested a lively contact with Stockfisch Records. So sometimes foreign artists were lent instruments for the concert, or Günter Pauler took care of the sound system from time to time. And since Pauler – as so often – had also brought his mobile recording equipment to the Esel, he asked Sara K. after the sound check if he could record the concert. Sara agreed – and played a fascinating programme that more than thrilled the audience.
They arranged to meet the following day at the Stockfisch Studio in Northeim. Sara K. was extremely impressed by the studio in the historic cellar, its extravagant furnishings and the professional technology. And it became clear to her that Günter Pauler not only runs a recording studio, but is also a passionate label boss and producer.
Back in the USA, Sara K. received a CD by post from Northeim. On it was the mixed concert recording – with some titles supplemented by restrained solos on the Dobro: recorded by none other than Chris Jones, whom Günter Pauler had asked for this favour on the occasion of a studio visit. Sara K. was not only overwhelmed by the good sound quality of the recording, but especially taken with Chris Jones’ guitar playing.
“… a document that shows all the protagonists in top form, Sara K. sings her heart out with her distinctive murmuring voice, intense and authentic, just as you know her. Günter Pauler did a top job on the console: precision, immediacy, power characterise the recording”. (stereoplay)
“Secondly, he had his buddy Chris Jones contribute subtle dobro tones on five songs, including the poignant “What’s A Little More Rain”. Exactly what he sent to Sara in the US at the time is now available on remastered – fine stuff.” (Good Times)
