Taken in a vacuum, Blood on the Silver Screen is a remarkable 2K25 pop album, fearlessly reveling in a blend of overstuffed production, earworm hooks, club-touched rhythms, and arena-ready bigness. Whether it’s the cardio-pushing intensity of “Possessed,” the funky swoon of “Slugger,” or the melodramatic, synth-pop dynamics of “Honeycrash,” there’s something here for most fans of modern pop music. However, Blood on the Silver Screen can hardly be taken in a vacuum, as it is Sasami’s third full-length album. It also marks an artistic and creative evolution that is absolutely stunning in its holistic vision which becomes clear almost immediately after the opening assault of “Slugger” segues into “Just Be Friends,” a mellow, country-tinged number that still throbs with a dark, avant-electro undercurrent.
In just those two opening numbers, the breadth of Sasami’s eclectic approach to music-making is laid bare, and while this is theoretically her first “pure pop” album, it also unapologetically evokes the more experimental attitude of her first two albums. For instance, “Love Makes You Do Crazy Things” starts with the crunchiest of riffs but then explodes into a technicolor bit of pop over-emoting, complete with an incessantly propulsive rhythm track, dynamic breakdowns, diddly-diddly guitar lines, and expansive choruses—cramming so much in that it somehow finds the sweet spot between Lady Gaga’s over-the-top attack and a sort of postmodernist kitchen-sink radicalism.
Likewise, “Lose it All” is a relatively simple piano ballad—relative, at least, to the sonic impact of the rest of the album. But even this cut can’t resist building to a cinematic, multi-instrumental climax that showcases the strength of Sasami’s songwriting prowess. That command illustrates that despite the intensity and appeal of the overwhelming production, what makes Silver Screen work so well is the compositional foundation, melodic innovations, and risk-taking freedom that Sasami brings to all of her music. – Jason Ferguson
