Shannon & The Clams – “The Moon Is In The Wrong Place” / The Moon Is In The Wrong Place is an upbeat, yet poignant narrative on grief and resilience from Shannon & The Clams. Woven from the threads of devastating loss and communal ties in the aftermath of profound loss – the sudden passing of Shannon’s fianceé just months before their wedding – this record unfolds as the Clams’ most introspective to date. With Dan Auerbach’s production, the album delves deep into themes of heartache and healing, and showcases the band’s trademark wry psychedelia, energetic nostalgia, and flourishes of retro beauty. It’s a tribute to the power of art and community to triumph over tragedy, and a milestone in Shannon & The Clams’ venerable oeuvre. If the last album by Shannon & the Clams—2021’s Year of the Spider—was one that reveled in its diverse, kaleidoscopic nature, The Moon Is In The Wrong Place finds the band managing the incredible trick of refolding all the wide-ranging sounds that colored Spider into an even more exciting and expansive “back to first principles” approach. Both explicitly digging deep into their core roots as a driving, swinging group of garage-rockers and implicitly leaving all of the obvious signifiers of that genre behind, Shannon and the Clams have produced an album that evokes all of the glories of 40 years of analog rock ‘n’ roll into a decidedly 21st-century concoction. Of course, it’s all still very analog (Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys is again the producer) and the primary focal point is still Shannon Shaw’s warm, full, and occasionally raspy voice. The title track manages to meld sci-fi imagery, caffeinated exotica drumming, and punk rock swagger, while “UFO” is its mirror image, all slow-burn, organ-driven psychedelia. But it’s on dazzling tracks like “The Hourglass”—which evokes the long-lost faux-Arabic psych-rockers Devil’s Anvil (only if they had heard Can)—and the staccato “Dalí’s Clock,” which simultaneously sounds like a post-punk anthem and a twangy western swing number, that the band continues to stretch their sonic vocabulary, providing thrilling new permutations on what rock ‘n’ roll can be. Only occasionally slowing down—as on “What You’re Missing” and the gentle, acoustic “In the Grass” (which, if you squint, wildly cops a little bit of the iconic chord progression that anchors “Dust in the Wind”)—for the most part, The Moon Is In The Wrong Place buzzes with the energy that comes from a band that is confident in their abilities but nowhere near settled into the sort of contentment that keeps them from taking risks. – Jason Ferguson
