From 2007 to 2015, Oehms Classics released a critically praised series of hybrid SACDs of the 11 symphonies of Anton Bruckner, performed by Simone Young and the Hamburg Philharmonic during her tenure as chief conductor of that orchestra. The cycle was reissued in 2016 in a 12-disc box set, at last bringing the recordings together in one affordable package.Young is among a small group of conductors who favor the original or Urfassung versions of Bruckner’s symphonies, on the theory that Bruckner intended them to stand as the official versions of his works, despite his numerous later revisions, most noticeably of the Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 8, which are substantially different in content and form. Indeed, the Symphony No. 3 in D minor is presented in the full, quotation-laden version that Bruckner dedicated to Richard Wagner, and which he later cut down to less than an hour in length; and all four movements of the Symphony No. 4 in E flat major, “Romantic” feature long sections that are strikingly unlike the later and better-known versions. While traditionalists may disagree with Young’s choices, or question the validity of these early versions, which challenge the way Bruckner’s music has been received for more than a century, serious students of the symphonies understand that all versions must be available, and that Young’s superb cycle is valuable because of her consistency of approach and interpretive insights. Highly recommended.
