That Frederik Köster belongs to Germany’s leading jazz trumpeters is well known. The award-winning Cologne (two jazz echoes, new German jazz prize, WDR Jazz prize) has been highly praised by the media and the public for years and celebrates success on International Festival and club stages. His personal style includes a remarkable stylistic openness. It ranges from pointed electronic inserts and even Oriental approaches in his quartet die Verwandlung to impressionistic intimacy in Duo with pianist Sebastian Sternal (Album Canada) to the spectacular cooperation with the Philharmonic Orchestra Hagen, which was released on the album Homeward Bound Suite in early 2018. In addition, Köster, “pillar of German Jazz” (Reinhard Köchl / Jazzthetik) has already worked with Albert Mangelsdorff, Randy Brecker, Ack van Royen, Lalo Schifrin, Trilok Gurtu, Nils Petter Molvaer, Biréli Lagrène & WDR Bigband and composed for various orchestras.
Köster’s collaboration with the Sirocco Saxophone Quartet, which has so far specialized in chamber music Repertoire (from classical to new music), follows seamlessly on from the above-mentioned Productions. Although this time the Initiative did not come from him, Köster considers the joint album Levante as a”logical consequence”. For Greta Schaller, co-founder of the quartet formed at the Royal College in London in 2006, the addition of an improvising jazz musician to her ensemble of classically trained saxophonists is completely uncharted territory. The factor of spontaneous expression irritated her, explains Schaller, representing Sirocco, as well as the additional timbres of Köster’s trumpet and flugelhorn. “We expected things to be different. Nevertheless, we were all the more positively surprised by the effects when certain aspects of the common game are no longer predictable. Frederik’s improvisations have also influenced our handling of the notes, although as a quartet we do not detach ourselves from the scores. But we react to his energy and playing style, for example in our dynamics or by articulating a little harder than usual in Groove pieces.“
Since its founding, the Sirocco Saxophone Quartet has delighted concertgoers, especially in Germany and England, for example in St Martin-in-the-Fields and Wigmore Hall in London, but also in other European countries. In 2014 and 2015, the quartet released two albums of classical dances and contemporary music. From the founding of the cast, only Greta Schaller is today, Gregor böhm, alder pushed 2014. About two years ago, Sirocco became a purely German Ensemble. Schaller knew the new members, Martin Hilner and Kristof Dömötör, among others from Engagements with the Gürzenich and WDR Orchester, the Düsseldorf and Bergische Symphoniker, the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen and the Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal. Tenor saxophonist Dömötör (as the only one in the quartet) is equally proficient in the classical and Jazz school, which can be seen on Levante in his distinctive Solo in the groovy Time to Change.
