Deeply rooted in the melodic, swinging jazz of the 1950s, drummer Snorre Kirk updates a soulful, classic jazz sound with modern arrangements. He emerged in the 2000s playing with Malene Mortensen and has established long-lasting creative relationships with musicians like Magnus Hjorth, Lasse Mørck, Kristen Korb, Sidsel Storm, and Jan Harbeck. Kirk’s debut album, Blues Modernism (2012), was widely acclaimed and his follow-up, Europa (2014), led to appearances at prestigious festivals in Europe and the United States. After two more albums with his Europa group, Drummer & Composer (2017) and Beat (2018), he set up a new quartet with tenor saxophonist Stephen Riley for his next albums Tangerine Rhapsody (2019) and Going Up (2021). Kirk’s seventh album as a leader, Top Dog, followed in 2022.Snorre Kirk was born in Norway in 1981, but moved to Denmark to study at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen in 2004, graduating in 2009. He first made a name for himself as a sideman for singer Malene Mortensen, appearing on her albums Malene to All of You (2008) and Agony & Ecstasy (2009), and as a member of pianist Magnus Hjorth’s trio, recording the albums Old New Borrowed Blue (2009), Gershwin with Strings (2011), and Blue Interval (2013). Hjorth would become Kirk’s most important musical collaborator, appearing on all of his albums as a leader.
Kirk’s debut album, Blues Modernism, was released in 2012, featuring Hjorth along with bassist Lars Ekman, tenor saxophonist Jan Harbeck, and trumpeter Karl Olandersson. Danish jazz magazine Jazz Spezial named it album of the year, and Kirk was nominated for two Danish Jazz Awards. His second album, Europa, followed in 2014, featuring Hjorth and Harbeck as well as bassist Lasse Mørck, alto saxophonist Oilly Wallace, and cornetist Tobias Wiklund. Subsequently, Kirk and his group played at festivals like Rotterdam’s North Sea Jazz Festival, Finland’s Pori Jazz, and the Art of Swing Festival in Kansas City.
